The next night, I climbed up into the dark attic.

I carried a and Yuki's little notebook.

The attic was , cold, and very quiet.

My heart was beating, but I took a deep .

"Yuki, are you here?" I asked into the dark.

For a moment, nothing moved and nothing answered.

Then I heard a soft near the window.

"Please do not go," the small said sadly.

I turned and saw the pale girl from before.

This time, I was not of her face.

"I will not run away," I said to her gently.

"I found your notebook, and I read your story."

Yuki's eyes grew wide, and then she began to cry.

"Everyone left me," she whispered in the cold air.

"I will stay and be your friend," I promised her.

"I will visit this attic every single day," I said.

She smiled for the first time, soft and warm.

"Will you really me?" Yuki asked quietly.

"I will never you, Yuki," I answered truly.

The cold air around us slowly began to feel warmer.

Yuki told me she had waited for a friend.

She had been in this house for years.

Now, at last, someone knew her name and story.

But she said, "Soon I will have to go."
