The New Girl

Last Monday, I started at a new school in town.

I was nervous, and my hands were cold all morning.

The classroom was big, and the students were already friends.

Nobody talked to me, so I felt very alone.

My teacher said my name, and everyone looked at me.

I sat down quietly and opened my new notebook.

At lunch, I ate my rice ball by the window.

The other girls laughed together at a table near me.

I wanted to smile, but I was too shy.

After lunch, I walked in the empty hallway alone.

I found some stairs at the end of the hall.

The stairs were dark, and they went up and up.

At the top, there was an old metal door.

The door was open just a little, and light came in.

I heard a soft sound behind the door.

My heart was fast, but I was curious too.

I pushed the door slowly with one hand.

Cool wind touched my face, and the sky was wide.

It was the school rooftop, high above the town.

I saw nobody, but the sound was still there.

I felt calm here, more calm than in the classroom.

For the first time today, I was not afraid.

I stayed by the door and looked at the clouds.

Maybe this quiet place could become my secret spot.
