The Person at the End
A reunion sixty years in the making
The door opened, and an old man stood in the warm light.
His hair was white, and his eyes were and kind.
"I have waited for this moment for many years," he said softly.
My voice shook, and I could not speak at first.
"I have known your grandfather since we were boys," he told me.
"We have been friends for more than sixty years."
I felt in my eyes, and my heart was full.
"My grandfather has passed away," I said quietly.
The old man was silent, and then he held my hands.
"I have hoped for news of him for a long time," he whispered.
"I have lived in this snow town all my life," he said.
"Every winter, I have watched the road for a visitor."
I gave him my grandfather's letter and the old ticket.
He read the words, and warm ran down his face.
"He has never forgotten me," the old man said with .
"And you have finished the journey he started."
We sat by the fire, and he told me many old stories.
"We have shared so many dreams," he said, smiling gently.
I felt happy and sad at the same time.
"Your grandfather has given me a great ," he said.
"He has sent his grandson across the whole country."
Outside, the snow fell softly on the quiet town.
