In the autumn of 1910, Thomas Ainsley stepped off the last evening train.

The little station of Wraythorn stood alone among cold and silent hills.

He had accepted the post of without ever seeing the place.

The man before him had left suddenly, and no one would explain why.

A stationmaster handed him a heavy key and a single burning .

"The box is yours now," he said, and hurried back toward the warm office.

Thomas climbed the wooden steps to the signal box above the empty line.

Inside, tall iron levers stood in a row, cold beneath his hand.

Everything had been left clean, as if the last man had expected to return.

On the desk lay an old , its leather cover cracked with age.

He opened it and read the careful notes of trains long since gone.

Each page recorded the hours, the weather, and every signal that had been changed.

The writing was neat, the work of a man who loved his .

Then Thomas reached the final and stopped, his breath held tight.

The last page had been torn out, leaving only a thin edge.

Someone had removed it in a hurry, long before Thomas had arrived.

He searched the drawers, but the missing page was nowhere to be found.

Outside, the wind rose, and the signal wires hummed a low, note.

He lit the stove and tried to calm the questions in his mind.

Why had the last gone, and what had he wished to hide?

That night Thomas slept badly, listening for trains that never came.

Before dawn, a distant woke him, sharp across the frozen valley.

No train had been to pass Wraythorn before the morning light.

He rushed to the window and stared into the grey and empty dark.

The line was clear, yet the came again, closer than before.
