The First Light

On the morning of the fifth day, a sound crossed the silent valley.
It was the deep beating of a helicopter flying low over the mountains.
Everyone rushed outside and waved their arms toward the pale morning sky.
The machine circled once and then slowly landed on the flat open ground.
Rescue workers in bright orange clothes jumped out and ran toward the crowd.
"You have survived five hard days completely alone," one of them said kindly.
The people had survived the cold, the hunger, and the fear of the dark.
Daichi was carefully lifted onto the helicopter to be flown to a hospital.
Keiko held his hand and promised that she would visit him very soon.
One by one, the tired survivors were helped across to the safer side.
Jin looked back at the community hall where they had lived for five days.
It was not the food or the fire that had truly saved their lives.
It was each other that had kept every one of them alive till .
Strangers had become something almost like a family during those long nights.
Yuki hugged Keiko and thanked her for protecting little Sora from the cold.
Even Mori shook Jin's hand and admitted that he had judged him too quickly.
"You have led us well," the old man said with warmth.
They exchanged names, numbers, and quiet promises to meet again one day.
Jin realized that he had gained something that he had never expected.
He had arrived as a lonely traveler and would leave as part of many lives.
As the helicopter rose, the town grew small beneath the morning light.
The bridge was gone, but the people had built something stronger between them.
Jin promised himself that he would never forget the faces of these strangers.
And though the shaking had stopped days ago, its lesson would stay forever.
