The Engineer in the Slums

A forbidden engine breathing in the smoke

In the days after the darkness, Kaelen wandered the poorest quarters of the broken city.

The slums had never depended much on the Art, and so they had suffered least.

Here people burned wood and coal, as their grandparents had secretly always done.

It was in a narrow , thick with smoke, that he first heard the sound.

Something was hissing and turning, steady as a heartbeat, behind a curtain of iron.

A young woman stood there, her hands black with , tending a strange machine.

"If the Empire knew what you were building," Kaelen whispered, "they would kill you tonight."

"If they still had the power to do so," she answered calmly, "then perhaps they would."

Her name was Sera, and she called the machine an engine, the forbidden word itself.

It drank water and fire, and it gave back a that never tired.

Even if the Art were to fail completely, she said, this engine would keep on turning.

If ordinary people had such machines, Kaelen realised, they would no longer depend on priests.

Even if the emperors forbade it, the knowledge could not be unlearned again.

Sera had taught herself from fragments, from rumours, from a single burned and hidden book.

Kaelen thought at once of the grey book and its words: "This too is possible."

If he were to bring her the knowledge he had found, their work might change the world.

Even if it cost him everything, he could no longer serve a lie in silence.

"If the people had light and heat of their own," Sera said, "they would fear no one."

She showed him wheels and pipes, valves and pistons, the grammar of a new language.

It was ugly beside the beauty of the Art, yet it belonged to whoever built it.

Even if a hundred workshops were burned, a hundred more would rise in their place.

For the first time since the darkness, Kaelen felt something he had almost lost: hope.

If the old world were truly ending, then a new one had to be imagined.

He promised Sera the forbidden chapter, and she promised him a machine that would not die.

Together they were no longer a keeper and a worker, but the makers of a beginning.

And outside, unseen, the eyes of the Empire were already turning toward the smoke.
