An empire that fell in a single night

The began not with a plan but with a single in the winter dark.

A crowd, its patience finally broken, marched upon the palace gates at midnight.

The old Art failing, the emperor's guards could no wall of light to stop them.

Torches raised, the people poured through the courtyards that had once been forbidden to them.

Had the emperor listened to the warnings, the night might have ended in peace.

But he had trusted the Art too long, and now the Art had abandoned him.

The palace , Kaelen ran against the fleeing crowds toward the burning archive.

If he had stayed at home that night, the record of both worlds would have burned.

Smoke pouring through the halls, he searched the shelves he had guarded all his life.

Had he not memorised their order, he would never have found the books in time.

He seized the grey book, the torn ledger, and the fresh he had begun.

The ceiling groaning above him, he wrapped the volumes tightly in his heavy cloak.

If the flames had reached the far shelves sooner, the truth would have been lost forever.

His eyes streaming, his lungs burning, he stumbled back toward the shattered doors.

Outside, the whole capital glowed orange, the palace of a thousand years falling to ash.

Had the people known what he carried, they might have torn it from his arms.

For to them all records were lies, and every book a servant of the Empire.

Kaelen alone understood that some of these pages held the seed of their own freedom.

The emperor gone, the priests scattered, the ancient order dissolved before the dawn.

Had the machines not already existed, the people would have had nothing to build upon.

But Sera's engines were turning still, patient in the slums beyond the fire.

Kaelen carried the saved books through the smoke toward the one workshop he trusted.

If he had hesitated even a moment longer, the roof would have fallen upon him.

He reached the street as the great collapsed behind him in a roar of sparks.

The Empire that had never fallen in a thousand years had fallen in a single night.

And in his arms, half-burned but breathing, the memory of two worlds survived.
