Ren did keep the memory, hiding the silver capsule beneath a loose tile in his flat.

Sleep would not come, so he replayed the burning city again and again until dawn.

Seeing that the deletion could ruin him, he told no one what he had done.

The Archive monitored every technician, and copies did carry a sentence of .

Still, curiosity, once awakened, does not politely return to sleep when ordered to.

On the fourth playback, Ren slowed the frame by frame near the standing man.

The recording blurred his features, as though the memory itself were protecting his identity.

Then, for a single frame, the cleared, and a sharp face stared back.

Ren froze, because he did recognise that face from a photograph in the public records.

Ren, seeing how far this reached, realised he had stumbled past a very dangerous line.

Yet the teacher's returned to him: promise you will remember it yourself.

At dawn he searched the archives for Cael Doran and found the file marked permanently closed.

Access denied, the screen said, and beneath it, a name he knew: authorising officer, Director Vance.

Ren stared at the name of the mentor he trusted most, and the room seemed to .
