Who I Was

A copy chooses, deliberately, to remember

Before offering the city its choice, Ren decided to face his own edited memory first.

Having realised he was a copy, he needed to know exactly what had been rewritten.

He sat in the pale chair where so many clients had surrendered their pain to him.

If he were an ordinary man, he thought, this final playback might have destroyed him.

The capsule holding his true origin slid into the reader with a soft, final click.

Having prepared himself for horror, Ren was surprised by the quiet he found.

The original man had loved someone, had feared death, and had chosen truth over safety.

If Ren were truly nothing but a copy, why did that stranger's love feel like his own?

Having watched the memory, he understood that a copy can still become a person.

"If I were only Vance's ," he said aloud, "I would not for Mira like this."

Grief, love, and courage had crossed the copy like light passing through honest glass.

Having accepted what he was, Ren felt, strangely, more free than he ever had before.

If he were to erase this knowledge now, he would simply become Vance's again.

Instead he chose, and fully, to remember every uncomfortable truth about his making.

"I am who I choose to be," he said, "not merely who someone chose to build."

Having decided, he uploaded the memories of Halven to a system only the citizens could .

Each person would receive one message: a truth waits for you, if you wish to know it.

If they were to refuse, that too would be their right, freely and exercised.

By dawn, thousands of quiet notifications had settled across the sleeping city of Halven.

Some would open the door to their past; others, understandably, would leave it shut.

Having given them the choice he had never been given, Ren finally set down his burden.

He found Mrs. Alden's address and sent her memory back, , unedited, and truly her own.

If she were to hate him for it, he would accept that as the cost of honesty.

Vance was gone, and the Archive would change, though slowly, as all frightened institutions do.

Ren kept one memory above all others: Mira, laughing at their cafe, believing truth was worth it.

Having chosen to remember, he walked into the ordinary morning, no longer afraid of who he was.
