Can Machines Understand?
機械は理解しうるか
A computer scientist and a philosopher of mind met to debate whether the machines we build could ever truly understand.
'Let me begin by distinguishing two claims, for they are often confused.'
'To say that a machine processes language is one thing; to say that it understands is quite another.'
'Precisely, and that is where I suspect your optimism runs ahead of your evidence.'
Tanaka, a functionalist, argued that understanding is nothing more than the right kind of information processing.
'By understanding, I mean the capacity to use information flexibly, to draw inferences and to correct mistakes.'
'If a system does all of that, then, strictly speaking, what more could understanding require?'
'Imagine a person locked in a room who manipulates Chinese symbols according to a rulebook, without knowing a word of Chinese.'
The famous thought experiment, Okonkwo suggested, showed that following rules is not the same as grasping meaning.
'The room produces perfect answers, yet no one inside understands anything; that is the whole point.'
'I would reply that the person is merely a component; it is the whole system that understands, not the clerk within it.'
'That is an ingenious move, but it seems to relocate the mystery rather than to solve it.'
At issue was whether meaning could arise from alone, or whether it required something more.
'Consider what it is like to taste coffee or to feel grief; no description, however complete, conveys the experience itself.'
'A machine may report that it is in pain, yet there is, as far as we can tell, nobody home.'
'Suppose, though, that we could build a system whose inner states guided its behaviour exactly as ours do.'
'On what principled grounds would we deny it understanding, other than the fact that it is made of rather than cells?'
Okonkwo hesitated, for the challenge exposed how little we know about our own minds.
'I concede that we cannot see inside one another either; in that sense, all understanding is inferred.'
'Even so, there is a difference between a being that has a point of view and a device that merely simulates one.'
'But how, in practice, would you tell the two apart?'
The distinction between simulating a mind and possessing one proved easier to state than to test.
'In other words, if the behaviour is , the claim that something is missing may be untestable, and perhaps empty.'
'Or perhaps it points to a limit of behaviour as evidence, rather than to the absence of the thing itself.'
Neither could produce a decisive test, and both suspected that none yet exists.
'What we call understanding may turn out to be a matter of degree, not a line that machines either cross or do not.'
'And what we call a mind may be less a than a mystery we have learned to live beside.'
Whether or not machines can understand, the debate revealed how much of value we judge without a formula, which raised, for both of them, the harder question of what makes anything, from an argument to a painting, genuinely good.
