The Date That Can't Exist
For a long time Nora only looked at the tape lying on her desk.
She had promised herself years ago never to open her mother's again.
A recording that carried an impossible date could only be a cruel .
Still, she was a person who needed to hear things for herself.
She loaded the cassette into the deck that she trusted most.
Her thumb pressed play, and for three seconds there was only .
Then a breath came through the speakers, soft and terribly .
It was the voice that had sung her to sleep a thousand times.
"Nora," the voice said, "my Nora, if you are hearing this, listen."
The room tilted, and Nora gripped the edge of the desk.
Her mother, Marion, had been dead for twenty years, or so she had believed.
The voice was older than the one that lived inside her memory.
It was tired, careful, and lowered, as if someone might be listening.
"They told you I drowned, but that is not what happened to me."
"The people who said it knew the truth, and they chose to lie."
Nora's eyes filled, though she had not cried in front of anyone for years.
"I do not have long, and there is so much you never learned."
The voice that she had lost was speaking to her across two decades.
"Find the town they hid from you. Count the—" and the tape broke.
A harsh click swallowed the rest, and the returned like the sea.
Nora rewound it and played the final seconds again and again.
The word that came after "count" had been cut away completely.
She had built a calm life on one fact: her mother was gone.
That fact, which had held her together, cracked open in a single minute.
She sat in the dark studio long after the tape had stopped turning.
Whatever had happened in that town, her mother had wanted her to know.
