Reasons to Stay

In the morning, the ordinary world tried gently to pull Nora back.

She has been building a careful, quiet life here for many years.

There were tapes to restore, deadlines to meet, and bills to pay.

Her Dan had been leaving kind messages on her phone all week.

"You have been working too hard," he wrote. "Come out to eat with us."

To walk away from all of this would be , she told herself.

She had spent years learning to keep her heart safely closed.

Now a single tape was threatening to open everything again.

She has been telling herself for hours that the date was a mistake.

It would be easy to lock the box away and simply forget.

To forget, however, she would have to stop hearing her mother's voice.

That voice had been waiting twenty years to speak these few words.

All morning she has been listening for reasons to stay where she is safe.

Her work, her flat, her were reasons enough for most people.

Yet none of them answered the question the tape had asked.

In the afternoon a second arrived, again without any name.

Her hands, which had been shaking slightly, grew still with fear.

This box was lighter, and something small slid inside as she lifted it.

She opened it slowly, half hoping to find nothing at all.

The box was empty except for a single photograph at the bottom.

It showed a white standing alone against a heavy grey sky.

There was no message, no date, and no place written anywhere.

Someone has been watching her, guiding her toward that distant coast.

To two parcels now would be to lie to herself completely.

The seemed to look back at her, and certain.

Her reasons to stay had quietly become her reasons to go.
