The radio station stood on a hill where no road seemed to lead.

had swallowed its walls, and its tower leaned toward the sea.

Pushing the heavy door open, Nora stepped into a wall of dust.

Reels of tape lay everywhere, stacked from the floor to the ceiling.

Gabriel had spent twenty years guarding this forgotten place alone.

"She recorded everything," he said, lighting an old oil lamp.

"Every voice, every promise, every lie this town has ever told."

Nora walked slowly between the shelves, breathing the smell of .

Someone had labelled each in a small, familiar hand.

It was her mother's , careful and slightly slanted.

Nora had not seen that writing since she was a child.

Gabriel chose one , threading it into a great grey machine.

"This one arrived a few months ago," he said quietly.

It was older than Nora remembered, cracked at the edges.

But it was her mother's voice, alive and breathing and real.

"If you are hearing this, my darling, then you found the way."

Nora's legs failed her, and she sat down hard on the floor.

She had buried this voice twenty years ago beside an empty .

Now it filled the station like light through a broken roof.

"Turn it off," she begged, but she did not truly mean it.

Gabriel watched her, saying nothing, letting the dead speak.

Tears ran down Nora's face before she understood she was crying.

The tape had proven the impossible: her mother had gone on living.
