第3章 第8節 第三の声
The Third Voice
Nora took the chapel tape to the station's oldest machine.
She threaded it with the care of someone handling a living thing.
The confession played, thin and strange, from beneath the drowned bells.
She had listened to it a dozen times, hunting only for words.
This time she closed her eyes and listened for everything else.
Beneath the voices lay the that every room quietly makes.
Engineers called it room tone, the breath of a space itself.
And under that breath, she heard another breath that did not belong.
It was , human, and patient, the sound of a person holding still.
Someone had been in that room who was never meant to be heard.
The third voice never spoke; it only breathed and waited and stayed.
Nora rewound the tape and matched that against her memory.
Every room has a , she knew, as clear as a .
This one was close, dry, and low, with a floor that swallowed .
It was not the chapel, and it was not the sea, and it was not the station.
"I have heard this air before," she said aloud to the empty station.
It was the room tone of her father's house, where the curtains never moved.
The same dead air had pressed on her the day he hid the photograph.
Nora sat very still, as still as the listener on the tape.
Whoever had breathed in that room had breathed in her father's house.
The and the liar had shared one silent set of walls.
She did not want to follow that thought, but the tape had already led her.
Someone close to her father had listened, and then had said nothing for years.
The machine reached the end, and the reel spun on into empty, hissing dark.
