Ask the Neighbors
Where were you this morning?
That afternoon, Mio and I visited our neighbors.
We wanted to ask them some important questions.
"Where were you early this morning?" I asked .
Our first stop was Mrs. Ito's flower shop.
"Did you see anyone near the bakery today?" I asked.
"No, I opened my shop at nine," she answered.
"I did not walk past the bakery this morning."
Next, we talked to old Mr. Tanaka in the park.
"Were you outside before seven o'clock?" Mio asked him.
"Yes, I fed the birds near the river," he said.
"Did you anything ?" I asked quickly.
"I heard soft footsteps behind the trees," he said.
I wrote his words down in my Case Notebook.
"What kind of footsteps were they?" Mio asked.
"They were light and fast, like a child's," he said.
This made our case more interesting.
We thanked Mr. Tanaka and walked the shops.
"Did the thief run into the park?" I wondered aloud.
Mio and I asked three more people that day.
Nobody saw the thief's face, but our clues grew.
Everyone was kind and answered our questions.
"Where did the small person go?" I asked myself.
The park was very close to the quiet bakery.
We wanted to near the trees again soon.
