If the Clock Had Stopped
The frozen hands that hid a lie
Mira and Arthur climbed the narrow spiral stair into the tower's room.
Cold air pressed around them, and the great bronze bell hung silent above their heads.
The clock filled one wall, its iron hands fixed forever at 11:47.
"If this clock were running now, it would be striking the hour," Mira whispered, touching the still gears.
Arthur lifted his lantern and studied the with careful eyes.
Then Mira noticed a small hole where a locking pin should have been.
"The clock did not stop by accident," she said slowly.
"Someone pulled this pin on purpose, and the hands froze at 11:47."
Arthur's face went pale in the lantern light.
"Twenty years ago, on the night Elena Hart vanished, someone stopped time inside this tower," he murmured.
Mira opened her notebook and began to aloud.
"If the clock had kept running, everyone would have known the real time that night."
"And if someone hadn't stopped it, the truth would have been obvious to the whole town."
She tapped the dial.
"The stopped clock was not a mystery; it was a tool."
"It was used to an ," Arthur agreed quietly.
Mira turned the pages of old town records she had brought with her.
" Thorne told everyone he was at the harbour meeting until midnight."
"But the tower clock said 11:47, so no one could prove exactly when Elena disappeared."
"If the pin hadn't been pulled, the town would have noticed the in his story," Mira said.
"He benefited from the time more than anyone else."
Arthur stared at the silent bell, and his hands trembled on his cane.
"If I knew the whole truth, I would tell you everything," he said, though his voice broke.
Then, almost to himself, he whispered, "If I had done my job back then, none of this would have happened."
He stopped suddenly, as if he had said too much.
Mira watched him closely and understood that Arthur had been hiding something about that night for twenty long years.
