For weeks, Mira had felt that Arthur was keeping something from her.

She had been searching for the truth about the vanished clockkeeper, and every path led back to him.

One grey afternoon, she found him in his study, staring at a locked wooden box.

"You have been carrying this for twenty years," she said quietly.

Arthur sighed and finally let her open the box.

Inside lay a thick file whose cover was marked with a single name: Elena Hart.

"I have been hiding these papers since the night she disappeared," he admitted.

Mira had been waiting months to hear those words, yet now her hands were shaking.

The file described how Elena, the town's clockkeeper, had vanished from the tower during a storm.

Arthur explained that Councillor Thorne had made him close the case within a week.

"Powerful men would not let me dig any deeper," he said .

"They had the files sealed, and they made me sign a report that I did not believe."

For twenty years, that lie had been eating at him.

Mira turned the pages, which had been gathering dust for two decades.

Between them, she found a photograph and a small silver .

The photograph showed Elena on the tower stairs, holding a baby wrapped in a blue .

Mira's breath caught, for she had been wearing an identical since she was a child.

Her had told her only that it had come from her real mother.

With trembling fingers, she opened both lockets and found the same tiny inside.

"Arthur," she whispered, "this baby is me."

The old detective had known all along, and he had been protecting her for years.

"Elena Hart was your mother," he said gently, letting the truth fill the room at last.

"She did not simply run away, and she did not simply ."

Mira stood up, her hardening into something fierce.

"Someone made her disappear, and I have been searching my whole life for this answer."

"Now I am going to prove what really happened that night."
